Nathan's Broken Arm - Take 2
I took Nathan for a check-up of his arm last Wednesday. The doctor didn't like what he saw. When Nathan broke his arm the radius (larger bone) was broken at a 10 degree angle. It's ok for the bone to be between 10 - 20 degrees. Nathan's moved to a 45 degree angle. His doctor said he needed to get it back in to place or Nathan would heal incorrectly and have problems with that arm and wrist forever. His initial injury had been 10 days before and the doctor said it was almost too late to do anything about it. He wanted to schedule Nathan to be seen in the hospital the next morning.

All snuggly before being taken to the operating room. He had to put on a gown and was so concerned that the doctor and nurse would see him in his undies! He had the doctors and nurses cracking up as we waited and he never complained one bit about not being able to eat anything.

His procedure took about 30 minutes and the doctor was able to manipulate the bone back into place (so no pins were needed!). His other bone was healing nicely, but he had to re-break the radius before he could get it back into place. Nathan was hurting a lot afterwards and the nurse said the pain meds would take about 20-30 minutes to kick in. Why they didn't give him anything in the operating room when he is done is beyond me. And they gave him meds orally instead of in his IV. It was tough watching him hurt so much.
About 30 minutes later, the crying became sobs and Scott was able to distract him by blowing up a latex glove and drawing a face on it.
This pic doesn't show it to well, but my boy's eyes were RED.
Going home.
All snuggled up on the couch.
The nurse told us that kids are usually pretty grumpy and irritable as the anesthesia wears off. Nathan got sick in the car on the way home and was pretty lethargic and grumpy the rest of the day. He only took pain medicine twice and by bedtime was back to his old self! His doctor gave orders that Nathan is not allowed to run, play on the playground, ride his scooter, etc. for 3 weeks. Knowing how Nathan loves being active, I think it's going to be a long 3 weeks...
